Bangkok protests are highly effective
wow! these guys really now how to do it! they have crippled the airports and taken the prime ministers office for DAYS now! really great show of peaceful dissent by the PAD. they are trying to unseat the Thai PM who was put into office under martial law during the coup d'etat of 2006.

here are the protesters taking the airport
a successful blockade such as this will inconvenience some people, but that is the point, isn't it.
and because they've taken a public place full of international visitors there will be no military solution in the military state of thailand!
hooray! power to the people!

Elliot Hughes, torture victim at RNC, testifies
Arrested during Day 1 of the RNC, Elliot Hughes, while under the care of the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department, was starved, beaten unconscious, hooded and gagged, and ultimately denied medical treatment.
In this video from The Uptake -- found at http://theuptake.org -- hear Elliot's full testimony before a special meeting of St. Paul's council members, on Wednesday September 24th, 2008.
Be warned. What Elliot has to report happened to him tells a disturbing story of unwarranted and unjustifiable police violence. By the end of his testimony, you'll see how St. Paul provided us with echoes of Abu Ghraib during the RNC.
The Ramsey County Sheriff's Department, headed by Bob Fletcher, felt it necessary to hold a press conference today before the public meeting to trash Council Member David Thune who had arranged the "Community Conversation".
Bob Fletcher is responsible for far more than Elliot Hughes' torture. He undertook many out-of-jurisdiction actions before, during, and after the RNC--including harassment of videographers who have remained in town to finish a documentary on the RNC protests.
Fletcher unreasonably attacked David Thune--the City Council member responsible for Ward 2 (Downtown & Lowertown St. Paul where the RNC and protests took place)--simply for holding a public meeting so that the very freaked out and disturbed locals can finally vent at the city.
A city that allowed itself to become Federal Occupied Territory ruled by thuggish police who made even home-owning, lifelong citizens of St. Paul be made to feel like the enemy by the police in their own neighborhoods.
Previously the mayors of both cities had been wishy washy about navel gazing, and had tried to pass off an appointed couple of federal lackeys with a mandate not to investigate police behavior, as an "investigation".
Elliot Hughes' testimony was the final straw that broke the camel's back. The deputy mayor of St. Paul rang Thune after the meeting to promise they would consider (an important word) expanding the investigation team from two members to a larger commission and having them and the Mayor attend the second meeting Council Member Dave Thune is calling.

cops raid MBN bus
By Dave Orrick
dorrick@pioneerpress.com
It's unclear why, but police put the heat on a weathered school bus Tuesday used by an independent media organization.
The group says the cops said they were looking for "dead bodies."
Police refused to provide any information on their actions, but a spokesman said the corpse thing was absurd.
"Does that sound logical?" police spokesman Tom Walsh asked. "We do things logically."
Larry Hildes, a California attorney and a legal observer with the National Lawyers Guild, said he saw a St. Paul police officer trying to pry the bus' side door open around 4:45 p.m. in a parking lot in Lowertown, where the bus was parked. "She informed me she was looking for dead bodies," said Hildes. "I informed here there were none." Hildes asked for a warrant; he said the police said they had none and left.
Hildes said bands of officers returned several times, at one point driving by slowly while one officer shined a light at the blocked-out windows and videotaped the bus.
"We're completely above-board," said Mary-Kate Stoever, a.k.a. Skinny Chef. "We just live in the bus."
Hours later, a Pioneer Press reporter observed a police car parked near the bus; the officer appeared to be watching. When asked what the cops were up to, Walsh responded, "I don't know anything about it. ... Nope, I'm not going to look into it either."

National Day of Action Against Electoral Politics
download this clip!
August 10, 2008 was the National Day of Action Against Electoral Politics protesting the circus of our sham democracy. In this vid you get to see first hand the "Freedom Cages" that are placed out of the range of the Pepsi Center where if you relinquish your Fourth Amendment rights, and get searched, you can exercise your First Amendment rights-- "within reason". In other words, out of sight and earshot of the convention and mainstream media.
In my experience these "Free Speech Zones" are generally a corral where you are surrounded by riot cops with masks, tasers, pepper spray, and rubber bullets. You won't find me here...the Denver Police has received a $50 Million federal subsidy for the conventions, $18 Million of which has been spent on "less than lethal" weapons to be used on those who would exercise their First Amendment rights. This frames the rhetoric of justification to quell dissent, essentially criminalizing the exercise of our constitutional rights.
When the mainstream media shows people in a cage surrounded by cops, they are seen as criminals and naer-do-wells, even if they are law abiding citizens. This keeps others who would speak out from opening their mouths for fear of being arrested, or beat up, or shot, or gassed, or tazed. All of which I am sure WILL HAPPEN! Hopefully not to me.... we'll see.
if I do disappear, look for me at "Gitmo on the Platte".

Kids' Village Attacked by Police at Rainbow Gathering
download this clip!
On July 3d at the Rainbow Family Gathering federal officers attacked the family in the "Kiddie Village" during supper time, when there were lots of people, many of them little children, gathered to eat. The Law Enforcement Officers (LEO's) opened fire on the crowd using pepper balls, tasers, and rubber bullets. Many were injured including children. Read more here.
Ironically, while the Forest Circus has been operating at record deficit, they spent $600,000 on brand new shiny tasers last year. Incredible because these officers have almost NO training in crowd control, and certainly could not use the devices on bears and cougars and hunters and shit.

Stop Pebble Mine!
download tis clip!
Pebble Mine is a huge threat to the biosphere in Bristol Bay, Alaska-- one of the largest Salmon rookeries in the world. If we continue to allow Canadian mining interests like Hunter Dickinson to dictate U.S. environmental "policy" we will find ourselves without clean water to drink and biodiversity in no time! We all may be headed that way anyway, but why expedite the process by allowing multi-national conglomerates to run amok? Do something!

Milo Yellow Hair on Uranium Mining in the Lakota Republic
download this clip!
Milo Yellow Hair is a longtime Oglala Sioux activist, working to prevent the Canadian corporation, Cameco, from expanding open pit uranium mining in Crow Butte, Nebraska.
The uranium mines in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Nebraska are poisoning the watershed, causing a variety of cancers on the rez and in the many communities downstream. This issue speaks not only to environmental and health concerns, but also those of sovereignty of the Lakotah peoples and the use of their sacred tribal lands.
There will be a hearing to review new Environmental Impact Reports and Water Studies in the third week of July.

the skinny: refueling
(Download this video)
Hooray! Three weeks and ten pounds later we've pulled out of the quagmire that is Appalachia! It is great to get back on the road!
We collected a full 150 gallons of waste vegetable oil in Charleston, WV. It went really smoothly. I am pretty good at bridging the language barrier, and Flux can back the bus into some pretty tight places. We were able to get about fifty gallons from a sweet little Indian restaurant using our new oil pump/filtration system. It took about an hour and a half to get the fifty gallons, but with diesel at almost $5/gallon, it is totally worth smelling like samosas.
We hit the road the next day (after the cat decided to come back) and drove to Xinia Ohio. We wanted to go further, but since we got a late start we decided to stop, and it was good that we did! Let me tell you, in the Midwest when they say severe thunderstorms, they are not kidding. Within an hour it was raining sideways, thunder and lightning, 3/4 inch hail... Scared the hell out of me, and I insisted that we park right up next to this little gas station building under the awning. It stormed til about 4:30am and we moved the bus so they could open their business up in the morning.
Today we drove across Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois (the land of my forefathers)and ended up in Iowa at the welcome center, where I almost burned the bus down trying to make pasta on a sterno cookstove. Good news is we finally ate, and now it's time to settle in and get ready to collect more oil tomorrow. There is more severe weather headed our way tomorrow night and Monday, and we need to be full up with WVO by the time we leave Omaha into Lakotah Nation, where the pickins' will likely be slim!

Reflections on the Movement
Dissipating Dissent at the North American Union by FluxRostrum
download this clip.
This pretty much encapsulates the feelings that I have on the organizing among activists today. The framing of activists is such that the biggest freakin' wingnut always gets the mainstream media air time. There are alot of people for whom being "that" wing nut is of imperative nature. These are frequently the "leaders" of the movement. These "leaders" are so wrapped up with having their name prominently featured in the collateral materials of the event, that they have forgotten the true goal of leadership is to ultimately make oneself obsolete.
Effective organizing involves a lack of ego. An ability to charm and communicate effectively, involving as many people as possible from diverse social, economic, political, and cultural backgrounds. To create a synergy of a multitude of existing organizations, working collaboratively on one agenda, regardless of the disagreements we all may have outside of that focus.
Until we have solidarity amongst us, we will continue to be subjected to the status quo-- which if you haven't noticed lately, is pretty fucked up!

the skinny
It is official! skinnychef is on the bus!
For those of you who do not know, I have made the decision and enacted the plan. I have sworn off the 9 to 5 (and even theatre work). I leased out my house for a year, packed all my furniture, my art, and bicycles into the shed and screwed it shut. Why? Well, skinnychef is on the road, and making media full-time with MobileBroadcastNews.com!
Corn-Dog and I, and everything we could fit in the little car, high tailed it to Slidell Louisiana to meet with my partner, FluxRostrum, at the Bio-Liberty compound. Here I am decompressing and unpacking and getting ready to cover the Security and Prosperity Partnership meeting in New Orleans this coming weekend.
We are traveling via the NOmadjik Bus, which is a waste vegetable oil (WVO) fueled school bus come media empire on six wheels.
Our Itinerary Includes (but is not limited to):
• April 20-21: New Orleans covering the meeting of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (aka. The North American Union or “Three Amigos”)
• May: West Virginia to prepare the bus for the journey
• June: Republic of Lakota covering the Lakota Independence
• June 22-July 9: Wyoming for (lord help me!) The Rainbow Family Gathering
• August 9: Denver Colorado to meet with my family and drive to Lake Tahoe for Mom and Dad’s FIFTIETH wedding anniversary on August 17th
• August 25-28: back in Denver to cover the Democratic National Convention
• September 1-4: Minneapolis MN to film the Republican National Convention
• September 11: New York, New York for the anniversary of 9/11
And then we are taking offers…Until January’s Inauguration in Washington DC
We are doing all of this on a dumpster diver budget, so if you are able to, feel free to help support independent media and buy skinnychef a burrito or two. Donate via PayPal to chef.skinny@gmail.com if you wish.
Thanks for your support!
You totally rock!

Winter Soldier; Jason Washburn
Winter Soldier was a four-day event that brought together veterans to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence.
Attendance at Winter Soldier was not open to the general public because of limited space at the event site. Distribution of the video has been equally insular...so pass it on!
Check out more of the Winter Soldier testimony on Iraq Veterans Against the War

Million Musician March?
Q. How many musicians does it take to make a million musician march?
A. About thirty.
This march commemorated the FIFTH YEAR of the Iraq war. It was "organized" by Instruments for Peace, but was sorely under attended considering SXSW has doubled the population of Austin with musicians and music fans, many of whom would probably have enjoyed participating. But, apparently the organizers didn't feel they needed to reach out to the visitors, so the march was pretty weak.
Activist leaders need to remove their ego from the equation and work collaboratively and aggressively to achieve change.
